📘 Overview

On Day 4, we transition from individual rescuer skills to professional-level operations. You'll be challenged to think like a seasoned guard, adapting to unpredictable conditions, using advanced equipment properly, and developing the judgment that separates good guards from great ones. This is your chance to synthesize everything you’ve learned so far into real-world surf rescue awareness.

These reinforce the chapters of the A.L.A. Training Manual that will be actively demonstrated and discussed in class. While not collected, your understanding of them will directly impact your performance.

🔧 Rescue Equipment & Maintenance

  • Daily inspection of towers, buoys, boards, radios, and AEDs

  • Limitations and uses of rescue buoys, paddleboards, and rescue lines

  • Onboarding unconscious victims onto boards

  • When and how to deploy a rescue line safely

  • UTV and vessel support for extended rescues

🌊 Environmental Conditions & Currents

  • Recognizing rip, longshore, channel, and structural currents

  • Breaking waves, inshore vs. deepwater surf

  • Escaping hazardous currents and helping patrons do the same

  • Lightning, wind, and sand collapse protocols

🧍‍♂️ Professionalism & Judgment

  • When to prioritize CPR over extraction

  • Recognizing when rescues escalate into medical or legal situations

  • Communications, coordination, and documentation protocols

  • Interfacing with EMS, Coast Guard, and beach management

⚠️ Attendance Is Mandatory

This session is crucial for your USLA compliance and will challenge your adaptability under pressure. Attendance is required unless previously approved by an Officer.

📌 Looking Ahead

Tomorrow is your final day. The course will conclude with a CPR course and a multiple-choice exam (taken on your phone), followed by our 8:00 PM Rookie Welcome Dinner at Porta Asbury Park. More details will be provided in class.
