COMMON QUESTIONS

Q: Where are the A.L.A. beaches and pools located?

A: We operate in three primary areas, called sectors: Long Branch, Mantoloking, and Seaside. Each sector includes multiple connected beaches. In addition, several private beach club pools are located in the Long Branch sector. You’ll select your preferred sector(s) when you apply.

Q: What are the age requirements?

A: You must be at least 15 years old to work pool shifts and 16 years old to work beach shifts.

Q: When does the season start and end?

A: Limited weekend shifts begin as early as Memorial Day weekend. Full-time positions start Father’s Day weekend (mid-June). The season ends on Labor Day, though limited weekend shifts may continue through September.

Q: Is the swim test different for beach and pool positions?

A: Yes.

• Beach swim test: 500 meters (or 550 yards) in under 10 minutes

• Pool swim test: 300 yards continuous (no time limit)

All swim tests are held at Rock Sports Club in Tinton Falls. Free swim clinics are offered throughout the spring to help candidates prepare, see our Events Page for details.

Q: Do I need lifeguarding experience or certifications?

A: No prior experience is required. We provide all training and certification courses you’ll need before the season begins.

Q: How do I apply?

A: Fill out our digital application. You’ll be able to choose your availability, select a tryout date, and start your journey. Summer’s coming - join the crew!

A.L.A Badge Checker Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Check each patron for their valid beach badge.

  • Politely greet each patron upon entering, and bid them farewell upon leaving.

  • Perform a badge-checking sweep of the beach every two hours.

  • Enforce local codes as to what items patrons cannot bring onto the beach.

  • Answer questions from patrons.

  • Sell daily badges (not applicable at every A.L.A. badge checker station)
